Stefan Popdimitrov
Stefan Popdimitrov was born in 1967 in Plovdiv — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. He descends from Bulgarian Revival-era families with a deep presence in the cultural and civic history of the country. He grew up in an environment where art and technological thinking coexisted naturally: his father was a theatre and film actor, and his mother an electronics programmer.
In 1995 he graduated from the Jules Pascin Free Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. Between 1999 and 2004 he continued his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, specializing in painting under Prof. Paolo Tessari. His diploma thesis, “The Sacred in Visual Art,” supervised by Prof. Saverio Simi de Burgis, explored the spiritual dimension of imagery and the role of the sacred in contemporary visual thinking.
During his academic years he was awarded a scholarship by the City of Venice and began working with the historic Venetian aristocratic family Conti Marcello del Majno — a lineage historically connected with masters such as Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, and Veronese. For the family he created portraits and paintings integrated into Venice’s cultural and historical environment.
He became associated with prestigious cultural circles including the intellectual club Al Colombo and the Circolo Artistico di Venezia – Palazzo Prigioni, and participated in international exhibitions and initiatives connected to the Venice Biennale.
In 2002 he received Second Prize at the international painting competition Arca Petrarca – Veneto.
Among his significant works is the monumental painting “Io Sono Medea” (200 × 200 cm), presented to the Venetian cultural elite by commission of the Maria Callas Association.
Over the following years, Popdimitrov realized monumental painting and sculptural projects for cultural, religious, and civic institutions across Europe, the Middle East, and North America, including:
• monumental religious compositions
• sculptures for Catholic and interfaith communities
• figurative works for public spaces
• artistic awards and cultural objects for international events
• commissioned works for aristocratic and private collections
His works are held in private collections, institutions, and family archives throughout Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.
Easel Painting & Collector Works
Alongside monumental projects, the artist maintains a strong practice in easel painting — portraiture, figurative composition, and sacred themes. His works combine classical technique, psychological depth, and contemporary symbolic thinking.
Many paintings are held in aristocratic collections, private archives, and cultural institutions, with numerous works created by commission.
The artist accepts a limited number of commissions for:
• family and official portraiture
• institutional portraits
• collector paintings
• spiritual and symbolic compositions
Monumental Sculpture & Public Art
Stefan Popdimitrov creates monumental sculptures and artistic structures for public spaces, religious centers, and institutions. His approach unites classical form, architectural awareness, and spiritual symbolism.
He works in wood, bronze, and mixed media, producing works ranging from intimate sculpture to multi-meter monuments.
Commissions include:
• civic and memorial monuments
• religious and spiritual sculptures
• corporate and institutional artworks
• artistic awards and symbolic objects
Small Sculpture & Art Objects
In addition to large-scale works, the artist produces refined small-scale sculptures and art objects suitable for private collections and interior environments.
These works combine sculptural precision with conceptual clarity, making them ideal for collectors and refined interiors.
